Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease...
what to do if both diseases occur together type 1 diabetes and celiac disease are two completely different diseases. Nevertheless, there are increasing reports of an increased incidence of celiac disease in people with type 1 diabetes. This places special demands on the therapy and training of those affected. Definitions of terms Celiac disease/sprue:
Celiac disease: Child form of gluten-sensitive enteropathy
Sprue: An adult form of gluten-sensitive enteropathy.
Both forms lead to characteristic inflammatory damage to the small intestine with the loss of intestinal villi.
Celiac disease and type 1 diabetes - what do they have to do with each other?
What happens in the small intestine with the manifestation of celiac disease?
The surface of the small intestine is enlarged by folds and protrusions so that the absorption of the nutrients can take place optimally. With an intolerance of gluten, a normal (i.e. gluten-containing) diet leads to damage to the small intestine. Due to the contact of gluten with the cells of the intestinal mucosa, the characteristic changes of the small intestine epithelium with loss of intestinal villi arise. In this process, the surface area of the intestine is reduced in size and not enough nutrients can be absorbed (malabsorption syndrome). The non-absorbed food components can lead to diarrhea and flatulence.
What symptoms indicate celiac disease?
