About the Book

English summary: In March of 1892, Richard von Kaufmann discovered a Roman era family tomb in the region of the Fayum in Egypt, in which eight mummies had been buried with their grave goods. It was an accidental discovery of a Berlin collector, who had dated the find on the basis of the paintings to the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. In the first place, it is important to note von Kaufmann's background and his personal connection to the Royal Prussian Museum in Berlin, which partly explains his interests in antiquities and his choice to travel to Hawara. A few years before his own discovery, the English archeologist William Flinders Petrie had conducted a successful excavation in the area in 1887 that caused quite a sensation on account of the rich findings, which included artefacts from Roman graves. In these graves, Petrie found elaborately prepared mummies with masks that bore, and this was the real cause of the sensational nature of the find, mummy portraits. On the whole, this discovery was of considerable importance because one of the mummies belongs the well-known portrait of a women known as Aline. The panel painting of the deceased women has received widespread attention for a number of reasons. For example it is one of the earliest known mummy portraits in which the painting was applied to cloth. Furthermore, the mummy is positively associated with a grace inscription that gives her name (Aline), her age (35) and other details are mentioned. These facts lead to further discussions about the dating of the tomb itself, especially with regards to Aline's portrait. On the basis of new CT examinations of the three child-mummies, the current research results are also provided in this study. The mummies of this wealthy family are not considered alone but placed in their own historical and regional context. The results of this research places this family and their grave in a new light with new insights that make a reevaluation of the current state of knowledge necessary. This volume is complimented by numerous photos that have not been published before.
