Hassan as-Sabbah naquit en 1044 à Qum, en Iran, à quelques kilomètres de la ville de Ravy, qui deviendrait Téhéran. D'une intelligence supérieure et avide de connaissances, il se jeta à coeur perdu dans la lecture au détriment de son père qui voulait en faire un marchand de tissu.Envoyé dans une madrasa à Ravy, où il fit la connaissance de Omar Khayyam, le futur poète perse, qui lui vouera une grande amitié, et de Abd el-Kassim, qui deviendra le Grand Vizir Nizam el-Mulk, qui lui témoignera une grande inimitié. A Ravy, il y suivit des études pour devenir Imam avant d'être convaincu par un Daï, un prédicateur, que l'hérésie ismaélienne était celle qui détenait la Vérité. Dès lors, il voua sa vie à défendre la doctrine ismaélienne.Devenu adulte, il arriva à Ispahan à la demande de son ami Omar Khayyam, scientifique à la Cour du Sultan Malik Shah, mettant ses connaissances à son service avant d'intégrer le Conseil du roi. L'étendue de ses compétences augmentera la jalousie du Grand Vizir qui les verra s'affronter pour s'attirer la protection du monarque. Nizam el-Mulk aura le dernier mot et Hassan devra s'enfuir de la capitale pour échapper à la mort. Dès lors, il lui vouera une haine éternelle.Hassan as-Sabbah parcourra la Perse pour échapper à ses poursuivants et arrivera en Inde, à Kaboul, où il fit la découverte de ce que le Hashish provoque chez ceux qui en consomment. Cette découverte lui donnera l'idée d'exploiter les vertus de cette plante pour faire découvrir la notion de Paradis à ses partisans.Après quelques années d'errance, Hassan se rendit en Egypte où régnait le Calife Fatimide al-Mustansir Billah en appliquant la doctrine chiite ismaélienne. Il y sera accueilli en maître avant de se voir pris dans les tourments de la succession, après que le Calife tombe malade, entre les partisans du prince Nizar, aîné et héritier désigné, dont il a pris le parti, et ceux du prince Ahmed, fils cadet, que le Grand Vizir Badr al-Jamali soutient. Cet antagonisme entre les deux camps le verra arrêté et emprisonné. Il ne devra sa fuite qu'à un coup du sort où certains y virent l'intervention de Dieu.Hassan as-Sabbah gagna la Syrie où il fut accueilli par des ismaéliens. De là, il gagna la Perse où il se mit en quête du château qu'il voyait sans arrêt dans ses rêves. Il erra durant des années avant de découvrir Alamut, le nid de l'aigle dans les montagnes de la chaîne de l'Elbrouz au nord de l'Iran. Lorsqu'il se rendra maître de la forteresse, il en fit un refuge où il rassembla ses partisans et mena sa guerre contre les Turcs Seldjoukides, en général, et Nizam el-Mulk, en particulier.La haine qui les anime les verra s'affronter par combattants interposés jusqu'au jour où l'un de ses Fedais, membre de son unité d'élite formée pour mener des missions particulières après avoir visité le paradis en ayant consommé du Hashish, tuera le Grand Vizir Nizam el-Mulk. Trente-cinq jours après celui-ci, ce sera le Sultan Malik Shah qui sera assassiné par deux autres Fedais.Dès lors, les Seldjoukides menèrent un combat sans fin pour détruire la communauté ismaélienne en assiégeant leurs châteaux et en pillant leurs villes. Mais les actions des Fedais mirent un terme à ces combats en assassinant leurs opposants, qu'ils soient Qadis, juges, Imams, vizirs, Grands vizirs et même Sultans.La communauté des ismaéliens, que leurs détracteurs appelleront la secte des Hashashin, les consommateurs de Hashish, qui donnera le mot Assassin, lutta pour pouvoir pratiquer leur culte en paix pendant plusieurs dizaines d'années en Orient contre tous ceux qui les en empêchèrent.
