In corpore sano, mens sana. Es cosa vista... salvo siempre, y por supuesto, los altos designios de Dios. Palabra por palabra, este era el tema de muchas, de muchisimas peroraciones, casi discursos, del menor de los Bermudez Peleches, del solar de Peleches, termino municipal de Villavieja. Le daba por ahi, como a sus hermanos les habia dado por otros temas; como a su padre le dio por la mania de poner a sus hijos grandes nombres, por si algo se les pegaba. Tres varones tuvo y una hembra. Se llamaron los varones Hector, Aquiles y Alejandro, y la hembra Lucrecia. Pero no le salio por este lado al buen senor la cuenta muy galana que digamos. Hector, encanijado y pusilanime, no conto hora de sosiego ni minuto sin quejido. Aquiles, no mucho mas esponjado que Hector, despunto por mistico en cuanto tuvo uso de razon, y emprendio, pocos anos despues, la carrera eclesiastica. Lucrecia, de mejor barro que sus dos hermanos mayores en lo tocante a lo fisico, al primer envite de un indiano de Villavieja, de esos que se van apenas venidos, dijo que si; y con tal denuedo y tan emperrado teson, que a pesar de ser el indiano mozo de pocas creces, infima prosapia y mezquino caudal, y a despecho de los humos y de las iras del Bermudez padre, la Bermudez hija se dejo robar por el pretendiente, se caso con el a los pocos dias, y le siguio mas tarde por esos mares de Dios, afanosa de ver mundo y resuelta a alentar a su marido en la honrosa tarea de acabar de redondearse en el mismo tabuco de Mechoacan en que habia dejado, trece meses antes, depositados los germenes de una sonada riqueza. Alejandro, el Bermudez nuestro, tuvo tanto de su homonimo, el de Macedonia, como sus hermanos Hector y Aquiles de los dos famosos heroes de La Iliada; aunque, en honor de la verdad y escrupulizando mucho las cosas, algo vino a sacar, ya que no del insigne conquistador, de su padre, pues llego a ser tuerto como el gran Filipo. Por lo demas, fue el varon mas fornido de la casa, y el mas sano y animoso. Eligio la carrera de Derecho, y le envio su padre a la Universidad, mientras Aquiles estudiaba Teologia en el Seminario, y se sabia, por lo que propalaba la familia del mejicano, que Lucrecia estaba en Mechoacan engordando a mas y mejor con la alegria de ver acrecentarse, de hora en hora, el caudal de su marido. Hector, hecho una miseria, se quedo en Peleches al cuidado de su padre. El cual, con esta cruz sobre la de sus muchos anos, y el martirio, cada dia mas insufrible, de la prevaricacion de su hija, se murio muy pronto. Con esta muerte, como con la de su yedra el muro vacilante, la vida de Hector, insostenible por si sola, se puso a punto de acabarse. Acudio a su lado el seminarista, enteco por naturaleza y extenuado por los ayunos y las maceraciones; y solos, tristes y doloridos los dos en el caseron de Peleches, murieronse en pocos meses uno tras otro, despues de testar en comun a favor de Alejandro; y no por aborrecimiento a Lucrecia, bien lo sabe Dios, sino por acumular los caudales libres de la familia en el unico encargado de perpetuar el ilustre apellido, y en la persuasion de que la hembra iba en prospera fortuna, no tenia mas que un hijo y podia pasarse muy bien sin las legitimas de sus dos hermanos. Ello fue que Alejandro se vio dueno y senor de las tres cuartas partes del haber de sus padres, que, aunque no eran cosa del otro jueves, reunidas en un solo monton daban para mucho en manos de un hombre hacendoso como el, por instinto, y que ya para entonces habia aprendido, de labios de un profesor suyo, hombre anemico
