About the Book

L'Epitre sur l'intellect de Farabi (c. 950) etait surtout connue jusqu'a recemment dans sa traduction latine editee et etudiee par E. Gilson en 1929. Ce traite, qui eut une certaine influence sur la scolastique latine, n'avait en francais fait l'objet d'aucune etude d'ensemble dans sa version arabe publiee par les soins du P. Bouyges en 1938. C'est cette etude qu'on s'est propose de mener a bien sur la base d'une nouvelle traduction commentee. En bien cerner l'intention necessitait d'en situer les themes a la fois dans l'histoire de la philosophie et dans la perspective de l'evolution de la pensee de Farabi. L'Epitre revele un penseur deja maitre de la falsafa naissante et dans la perspective de l'evolution de la pensee de Farabi. Bien loin du traite brouillon qu'on a voulu y voir, son etude attentive revele un philosophe deja maitre de la philosophie developpee dans ses oeuvres plus tardives et maitre egalement d'une pensee pedagogique qui a donne au traite sa facture particuliere: clair sur les themes politiques du debut du traite, qui sont analyses ici pour la premiere fois, puis volontairement elliptique vers la fin, au moment de conclure sur les Causes secondes et le Premier principe, Farabi va d'abord a la rencontre de ses lecteurs et les incite ensuite, par la difficulte croissante de l'expose, a rechercher au-dela du traite les questions que celui-ci ne fait qu'esquisser. Tout en invitant ses contemporains a venir en apprendre plus aupres de lui, l'oeuvre pose les fondements conceptuels de l'esperance philosophique et le terme de la vie humaine accomplie: l'immortalisation par la connaissance, au stade ou l'intellect devient acquis (adeptus). Alexandre d'Aphrodise et en particulier son De anima servent ici de caution et de pretexte aristoteliciens a l'elaboration d'une doctrine dont l'ontologie de reference est inspiree du Plotin arabe.
About the Author: Farabi (ob. 950), philosophe persan originaire des confins des mondes persan et turc (Transoxiane), vient s'etablir a Bagdad vers la fin du IXe siecle. La, apres avoir frequente quelque temps les theologiens mu?tazilites de la capitale, il rompt non seulement avec la theologie islamique, mais aussi, plus largement, avec lidee quil pourrait exister un savoir authentique fonde sur des premisses religieuses. Il devient alors leleve des philosophes peripateticiens chretiens de Bagdad. Ses maitres, comme ses disciples connus, sont tous chretiens. Avec ses collegues, il devient lun des premiers grands commentateurs dAristote en arabe. Mais son uvre ne doit pas davantage au christianisme qua lislam. Tout en ladaptant, il fait sienne lideologie religieuse des derniers Hellenes et pretend quune religion doit etre lanalogue, au niveau de lopinion, de la philosophie theoretique. Elle ne peut donc etre fondee que par un philosophe accompli.
