Selbst wenn diese Daten vielleicht nicht immer aus repräsentativen Untersuchungen stammen und nicht zu vorschnellen Pauschalurteilen verleiten lassen sollten, weisen sie trotzdem auf eine Tendenz hin, die in dem vorliegenden Buch Thema sein soll: Durch ihre veränderte Spielkultur geraten viele Kinder in Bewegungsmangel. Besonders an zeitlichen Ressourcen fehlt es den Schulen, um dies auszugleichen, da die Verkürzung der Schulzeit im Rahmen von G8 und schlechte Ergebnisse in der PISA-Studie einen verstärkten Fokus auf das Lernen fordern. Trotzdem können Kindern hier zumindest Sportergänzungen und erste Schritte zu einem positiven Umgang mit Bewegung geboten werden, was auch die Konzentrations- und Leistungsfähigkeit der Schüler steigert. Modellversuche wie die "Bewegte Schule" in Niedersachsen oder das Projekt "Bewegungsfreudige Schule NRW 2010" wollen in diesem Zusammenhang neben einer verstärkten sportlichen Betätigung der Schüler auch eine Veränderung der Schule zu einer kind-, lehrer- und lerngerechten Rhythmisierung des Unterrichts erzielen. Es geht also beispielsweise darum, die tägliche Bewegungszeit zu steigern, eine bewegungsgerechte Gestaltung des Schulhofs umzusetzen oder Spielgeräte in den Pausen für die Schüler bereitzustellen. Letzteres Konzept der "Bewegten Pausen", das insbesondere Kindern der fünften bis achten Klasse zugedacht ist, soll in dieser Studie vertieft untersucht werden. Dafür wird ein theoretischer Rahmen zum Zusammenhang zwischen Lernen und Bewegung aufgestellt, um daran die Vorteile, Chancen und Grenzen des Projekts hervorzuheben und zu beleuchten, wie diese in den Schulalltag integriert werden können.
