1990 begann ein neuer Abschnitt der Aizanoi-Grabung mit dem Ziel, die Stadtentwicklung von den Anfangen bis zur Einbeziehung der Ruinen in das traditionelle turkische Landstadtchen Cavdarhisar zu untersuchen. Diese Untersuchungen liefern Erkenntnisse zur Erforschung des Siedlungswesens und der Kulturlandschaften im westlichen Zentralanatolien und daruber hinaus. Im Gegensatz zu anderen anatolischen Stadten hat die Lage Aizanois abseits der modernen Wirtschafts- und Tourismuszentren zahlreiche antike Hinterlassenschaften bewahrt. In vielen Dorfern finden sich Architekturteile, die offensichtlich aus christlichen Bauten stammen, aber kaum Hinweise auf antike Reprasentationsarchitektur. Philipp Niewohner analysiert jenen historischen Wandlungsprozess am Ende der Antike, indem er alle auffindbaren fruhbyzantinischen Monumente der Aizanitis dokumentiert und auswertet. Er weist uberzeugend nach, dass sich die Siedlungsbilder des stadtischen Zentrums und der landlichen Siedlungen im 5. und 6. Jh. angleichen. Die fortschreitende Vernachlassigung der Stadt geht mit einem Bauboom auf dem Land einher, der auf steigende Bevolkerungszahlen hinweist - eine Tendenz, die ganz Anatolien im 5. und 6. Jh. pragte. Ihre Ursachen liegen im komplexen Zusammenwirken von politisch-gesellschaftlichen und okonomischen Faktoren.Ein weiteres Ergebnis zeichnete sich erst im Lauf der Untersuchungen ab: Erstklassige Steinmetzarbeiten aus dem gleichen dokimischen Marmor, der in der Kaiserzeit fur die beruhmten kleinasiatischen Sarkophage verwendet wurde, belegen die fortgesetzte Produktion der Bruche und Werkstatten in Dokimion. Sie entwickelten im 4. Jh. jenes charakteristische Formenrepertoire, das in theodosianischer Zeit von den hauptstadtischen Marmorbruchen auf Prokonnesos ubernommen wurde, und blieb bis ins 6. Jh. erstklassig. Diese Entdeckungen werfen ein neues Licht auf die Entwicklung der Steinmetzkunst, insbesondere in Bezug auf das Verhaltnis von Hauptstadt und Provinz. Fur die weitere Erforschung des fruhbyzantinischen Siedlungs- und Steinmetzwesens in Anatolien bieten die neu vorgelegten Befunde aus Aizanoi eine umfangreiche und in vieler Hinsicht reprasentative Materialbasis.
About the Author: Contributor Biography - German Philipp Niewohner wurde 2004 in Mainz promoviert und arbeitete danach als Wissenschaftlicher Angestellter in Freiburg und Heidelberg. Seit 2006 ist er Referent fur byzantinische Archaologie am Deutschen Archaologischen Institut in Istanbul. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt bildet die Turkei.
