About the Book

This book was written to fill what I considered to be a gap in aviation history. Most books on the subject have little to say about engine development, but it has been the ongoing improvement, and enlargement, of engines that has made all the rest possible. The relationship between the evolution of engines and that of the whole aircraft has sometimes been direct and simple, sometimes complex. Its most obvious manifestation, one might think, has been that more powerful engines have made larger planes possible. However, this has most often happened on a three-step basis. First, a large plane is built using several smallish engines. Then, as larger engines become available, an aircraft of about the same size is built with fewer but more powerful engines, and, in the third step, several of the larger engines are used to make a still larger craft. Thus, Sikorsky's "llya Muromets," the world's first four-engine plane, had 150 hp. engines and grossed about 10,500 Ibs. (4773 kg.). By 1917, the availability of the 360 hp. Rolls Royce allowed the Handley Page 0/400 and the Vickers Vimy to slightly exceed this weight on two engines: and, finally, four of these same engines were used for the 24,700 Ib. (11,227 kg.) Handley Page V/1500. The question of safety made the process a little more complicated for civilian planes. For instance, the Ford SAT, with its three Wasps, could have been quickly replaced by a plane with two Hornets or Cyclones, as far as performance is concerned. With late-'20s technology, though, the twin-engined plane could not have kept flying on the remaining engine had one engine failed, whereas a trimotor could keep going on two. The shift to two engines had to wait until the availability of retractable gear and controllable-pitch propellers made single-engine flight possible for twins. Only then did the Boeing 247 and Douglas DC-series twin-engined transports emerge. Once the Boeings and Douglases had proved themselves, the next step to a plane with four engines of about the same size was inevitable, though the fact that there was no demand for greater passenger capacity caused the increase to be held off until about 1940. Even then, only nine Boeing Stratoliners, the first planes with four engines in the 1800 cu. in. (20 litres) class, were built.
