About the Book

One family's path to navigating a serious health challenge - full of inspiration and practical advice for your family. When their mother faced a serious health challenge, the Tarantine family discovered that the U.S. health care system is broken - and even dangerous. Over a 30-month period, the Tarantines navigated multiple facilities and systems, determined to give their mother care that suited her needs rather than those of the providers. In this book, Ruth's daughter (also Ruth) shares practical lessons for your journey toward health care that meets your needs and provides the highest quality of life along the way. You'll learn the following: * The single action any family can take to ensure better care. * Tips to organize information to reduce medical errors. * How to understand and insist on patient-centered care. * Keys to effectively persuade providers and insurance companies. * Steps to care for yourself while caring for a loved one.
About the Author: Ruth A. Tarantine, DNP, RN, has been a nurse for 25 years. She has spent the majority of her career working in intensive care units at various hospitals across the country. Although she loves teaching patients and caring for patients at the bedside, she found that she could directly improve the quality of care of many patients through nursing education. Teaching future nurses and future nurse educators is her passion. To this end, she obtained her Doctorate in Nursing Practice in 2008 and began a full-time teaching position at a private university shortly thereafter. Ruth has presented research nationally and internationally on the use of simulation in health care provider education and its effect on quality of care. Ruth is also passionate about the care of elders. The experience of navigating the health care system for her mother served as a wakeup call. She was disillusioned with the care of elders she witnessed and vowed to help those that couldn't help themselves. Ruth started Eldercare Navigators, LLC, with her attorney brother, Rick. Together, they assist elders and chronically ill individuals to navigate the complex health and legal maze. Ironically, they both found that their professions complement each other in the elder community. While elders may face a myriad of medical decisions, they also need legal guidance to protect their assets and plan for their future. Eldercare Navigators, LLC, offers individual customized health and legal navigation services as well as works with employers to provide elder care benefits to employees who may be caring for aging parents.
