Dum de dolis in circensibus curribus inquirit, duabus feminis occurrit, quarum artes et veneficia, amorem et odium excitant. Cor Aelii inter amoris et odii fluctus, passionis ac magicarum artium vertitur.
Cum amico vetere, mysterium e procul terra detegitur. Et nunc, cum veritas se aperit, fortuna ipsius Romae - magnitudinis urbis - in discrimine est.
Narratio te tenet cum suspensu, rebus gestis, reconditis arcana, amore intenso: omnia haec in hoc libro continentur.

Alea, vinum, et lupanaria
Aelius Valerius, Romam regressus non nisi duobus mensibus, per vias urbis ambulabat. Dies ille autumnales calore perfusus erat, sol aureus foliis flavescentibus lucem dans.
In foro, negotiatores clamantes e tabernaculis suis merces vendebant: poma rubentia, olivae oleagineae, panis recens coctus et pisces a mare advecti. Aedificia alta ad caelum surgebant, velis albis tegmina fenestris praebentibus ne calore solis intus penetraret.
Pueri in plateis ludebant, follibus aereis sibi invicem iactantibus, dum puellae in angulis sedebant, flores in coronas texentes. Canes vagi inter pedes eorum currerent, spem cibi ex manibus tenentium querentes.
Ad fontem marmoreum, mulieres amphoras aquae plenas ferebant, inter se sermocinantes de novissimis nuntiis et cotidianis curis. Aelius eas audivit loquentes de ludo gladiatorio proximo et nuptiis viri senatoris.
Praetereundo, Aelius fragores diurnos Romae percipiebat: pueri in plateis ludentes, viatores quaestiones clamantes de via, et mercatores pretia suorum bonorum praedicantes. Prope angulum viae, duo senes sedebant, alter alteri fabulam de magno piscatores nuper captivo narrabat, quae risus proximorum elicuit. Porro, praeter ianuam tabernae, mulier adulescentem increpabat propter panem quem, ut dicebat, immaturus coxerat. Tamquam fluvio sonorum et vocum, vita Romae in auribus eius fluebat, recordans eum, quam varius et plenus vita esset hic urbs.
In proximo angulo viae, faber ferrarius in officina sua operabatur, ignis ardens et malleus in incudem cadens strepitum magnus faciebant. E contra, coquus in taberna sua olera et carnes in sartagine frigebat, fumus fragrans ex camino ascendens.
Prope porticum, vir senex sedebat, lyra in manu, carmina antiqua cantans. Transeuntes nummos in eius pila iaciebant, grati ob melodiam dulcem.
Aelius, haec omnia spectans et audiens, corde gaudebat. Romae, domo sua, iterum erat, et pulchritudinem vitae quotidianae agnoscebat. Quamvis procul ab urbe fuisset, sentiebat se vere domum reversus esse, inter cives et notitias suas.
Cum Aelius ad tabernam vinariam accessisset, cantus intus sonans eam facile indicabat. Exterius, taberna modesta apparebat, murus ligneus et picturae simplices ad portam ostendentes vinum effusum ex amphora. Ante ianuam, mensae ligneae et sellae sub pergula posita erant, ubi cives variis ordinibus sedebant, calicibus vinariis in manu.
Super ianuam, tabula pendebat in qua scriptum erat "Venum Vinum" - vinum venditur hic. Et proxime, alia tabula pendebat, pretia vinorum ostendens: "Vinum merum" - vinum purum et carius, "Vinum mixtum" - vinum aqua mixtum et, pro pauperibus, "Vinum faecatum" - vinum cum sedimentis.
Aedificium ipse vetus et usus videbatur, sed plenum vitae erat. Fumus tenuis ex camino exibat, signum cibi in taberna cocti. Et prope fenestram, vas marmoreum aqua plenum stetit, quo cives vinum diluere possent si ita vellent.
