Dieser Ausspruch fand Einzug in den allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch. Etliche Jahrhunderte später könnte man die 1970 von George Akerlof veröffentlichte Arbeit: The Market for Lemons: Qaulity Uncertainty and the Market Mechanism ebenso überschreiben. Denn im Grunde sagt der Ökonom genau das aus. Wer das Wissen hat, der hat auch die Macht und kann diese für sich nutzen. Asymmetrische Informationen führen zu einer Ungleichheit der Wissensverteilung und können zu Gunsten des Wissenden ausgenutzt werden. Jedoch bringt dieses Wissen auch Verantwortung mit sich, denn am Ende kann die Ausbeutung der Uninformierten zur Gefährdung kompletter Märkte führen. Dass die Überlegung von Akerlof, der für sein Werk 2001 den Wirtschaftsnobelpreis erhielt, nicht nur bloße Theorie ist, wird täglich in vielen Situationen deutlich. In dieser Seminararbeit soll der Markt für Fair Trade Kleidung als ein praktisches Beispiel herangezogen und auf Akerlofs Modell angewendet werden. Zunächst werden die wesentlichen Merkmale des Lemon-Modells im Kapitel zwei dargestellt. Dabei wird nicht nur auf die theoretischen Grundannahmen geschaut, sondern auch der Preis der Unehrlichkeit in den Fokus gerückt. Außerdem werden kurz die vorgeschlagenen Lösungsmöglichkeiten von Akerlof, sowie der Ökonomen Spence und Stiglitz dargestellt.1 Im Kapitel drei finden diese theoretischen Konzepte dann auf den Markt für fair gehandelte Kleidung Eingang. Dabei wird explizit aufgezeigt, wo in diesem Bereich asymmetrische Informationen vorliegen, weshalb es zur adversen Selektion kommen kann und warum dies eine Gefahr für das komplette Angebot darstellt.
