Revised-2019, Additional bible studies have been included and the Catechumen Workbook is more user friendly.This particular study is intended for adults who are studying to become communicant members of the Church. It is set up in 40 sessions. However length of catechesis can vary, depending upon the prior instruction of the catechumen, fewer if the catechumen has already been instructed in the faith, but not less than 10, more when questions persist. This study works well as a Catechetical review for an adult Bible Class or for a youth, post confirmation, Bible Class.This Adult Catechetical workbook requires the purchase of the accompanying Leaders Guide.This Adult Catechetical Leaders Guides is intended to be used with the Student Workbook. Each student will need a workbook.The instruction is divided into 10 Units and each Unit has 4 parts. The order of the Lessons is: 1A through 10A, 1B through 10B, 1C through 10C, Reviews on Units 2 through 7, and 7 Bible Studies on the Life of the Church. By following this pattern the basics of Christian Doctrine are repeated and reviewed with each cycle thus reinforcing the doctrine of the Church. Part A of each Unit focuses on Luther's Small Catechism. Part B of each Unit focuses upon the biblical texts, which support the doctrines of the Church. Part C of each Unit focuses upon biblical accounts, which are used to illustrate the life of the Church. There are 6 Reviews based upon the Explanation of Luther's Small Catechism (pages 23, 34, 45, 65, 73, 85). There are 7 Bible Studies on the Life of the Church (pages 94, 109, 113, 116, 118, 121, 125). Each session begins with instruction in the Divine Service. This instruction is outlined on the first page of each Unit for each of parts A-B-C. The books required for this instruction are: The Holy Bible (using a faithful version, not one of the modem paraphrases). The Lutheran Service Book (CPH 2006), and Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation, CPH:2008. The author recommends the English Standard Version of the Bible.GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH CATECHETICAL SERIESPreschool to Kindergarten: Bible Stories and sheets to color. It is recommended that the classroom have a flannel graph intended for Bible Stories. This lesson plan is set up for two years, a year on the Old Testament and a year on the New Testament with the memory work increasing from 3rd Grade to 4th Grade. Grade 5: Divine Service, Vol. I, written by Rev Friedrich, is a Catechetical instruction in the life of the Church, the Divine Service. It follows the orders found in The Lutheran Service Book, Settings 1 & 3. Each lesson includes a brief explanation of a relevant Bible Story and a part of the Divine Service. Memory work is from Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation.Grades 6-7: Youth Catechesis, typically lead by the Pastor, is two years of Catechetical Lessons written by Rev Friedrichs based upon Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation, CPH:2008 (22-3110), The Lutheran Service Book, CPH:2006 (03-1170).Grade 8: Divine Service, Vol. II written by Rev Friedrich is a Catechetical instruction in the life of the Church, the Divine Service. Like Divine Service, Vol. I it follows the orders found in The Lutheran Service Book, Settings 1 & 3.Adults: Forty Lessons by Rev Friedrichs based upon Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation, CPH:2008 (22-3110), The Lutheran Service Book, CPH:2006 (03-1170), and Bible studies for each lesson.
About the Author: Rev Galen Friedrichs is the pastor of Grace Lutheran Church which he has served since February of 2000. He previously served as pastor at St John's and Peace Lutheran Churches at Columbia and Hecla, SD. He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft Wayne, IN in 1993. He was on the Board of Regents for Concordia University, Seward, NE, 1988-1990. Rev Friedrichs was raised on a dairy farm in northern Kansas in a Lutheran home and attended the Lutheran Parochial School at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bremen, KS. He married Lynette Grannemann in 1977; they have been blessed with three children and to date ten grandchildren.
