En esta obra cuentan los principios morales, la frivolidad y el poder que en ciertos momentos puede ser difícil de conservar. La necesidad de convencer, de pactar, de rodearse de amigos que alcahueteen a los poderosos para que puedan seguir conservando la autoridad. Es divertido pensar que desde los tiempos de Adriano nada ha cambiado. La esencia humana está siempre presente a través de los años y de los siglos. La ironía de los poderosos, el sarcasmo y la burla que conmociona, porque a veces es tan descarada que parece que nada tienen que perder. Los sentimientos relacionados con el amor, los celos, el odio, la incomprensión, la pasión sexual, el amor y las cosas del espíritu, no han cambiado jamás. El autor no ha escrito una tragedia como la de Antonio y Cleopatra de Shakespeare, en la que se dan algunas de las más bellas manifestaciones del pensamiento humano. Pero inmersos también hoy en una sociedad vacía de objetivos, de capacidad de introversión, de razonamiento y de juicio, ha pretendido, como hizo Shakespeare, vaciar sobre todos nosotros una hermosa reflexión. Las vidas de Adriano y Antinoo estuvieron en poder de otros escritores, entre ellos Fernando Pessoa o Marguerite Yourcenar, que casi desde la mitad del siglo XX se hicieron dueños de ellas. Pero como dijo una vez Alfonso Reyes, "que por cualquier camino alcanzamos la posesión de un módulo para manejarlo a nuestra guisa. Qué otra cosa hicieron los trágicos de todos los tiempos sino volver a contar a su modo una historia conocida en general", y contaba que una vez, cierto amigo suyo, en un ayuno de letras, le dijo cuando leyó la Ifigenia: "Muy bien, pero es lástima que el tema sea ajeno". Alfonso Reyes le contestó diciendo que: "Lo mismo pudo usted decir a Esquilo, a Sófocles, a Eurípides, a Goethe, a Racine, etcétera. Además, el tema, con mi interpretación, ya es mío. Y, en fin, llámele usted a Ifigenia, Juana González, y ya estará satisfecho su engañoso anhelo de originalidad."
