Adriana, a young Guatemalan lawyer has become a humanl rights reporter during the massacres going on in her country in the name of the War on Communism. With weapons from the United States, hundreds of villages are being leveled during the late Seventies and early Eighties. Returning from taking witness testimonies in some backland villages of the Quiche' region she is run off the road by a military officer and brutally attacked. She survives the attack, he doesn't. But she knows she will die because of it. For weeks she waits at her home for them to come, armed with weapons from her deceased father. When they don't she decides to take the battle to them. But injuries to her body are not healing. Months after the attack she realizes she is really going to die all alone, just another of the thousands murdered in that supposed civil war. She finally, for the first time in her life, calls for help. All her friends are dead or exiled, her call goes out to a country far away in which a dear friend is exiled but still alive. Her call mobilizes other calls to places she has never been, finally ending in Peru where her best friend and former teacher has just moved. Adriana, A Call for Help is the story of her escape from Guatemala and her reunion with that friend in a safe country, the beginnings of recovery, the renovation of a friendship and the ability to trust once again.
About the Author: Dr. Melvin Droubay has lived most of his professional life in Latin America. A professional Geographer, he has taught at the University of Oregon, the University of Houston and the University of West Florida, as well as at several institutions of higher education in Latin America. He has also been a contractor to the Agency for International Development, a U.S. Foreign Service Officer and consultant to various governments and international organizations. He is the author of a series of fiction books about the use of drug money to finance the War on Communism in the 1980's based on his own experiences. That series, called Movin' Money is backed by a book of research sources called Movin' Money - The Documents which gives the reader on-line access to all of the documents about the theme. He now lives in Costa Rica where there is no army and a socialized, human medical system.
