About the Book

English summary: Giambattista Marinos Adone was first published in Paris in 1623. This long mythological poem recounts the tragic love of Venus and Adonis centered on the kingdom of Cyprus. Marino combines the sacred and profane and common and mystical love in making Adonis into a kind of antihero, at once passive and effeminate and a Christological victim of the false values of the world. The final declaration fixates on the paradoxical valorization of a heroism of peace.
