Adolphe Adolphe est un jeune homme âgé de vingt-deux ans au début du récit. Il vient d'achever ses études à l'université de Göttingen. C'est un garçon d'une intelligence supérieure et qui se prépare à embrasser une brillante carrière. Il se montre cependant très désabusé et il n'hésite pas à manifester en public une humeur des plus caustiques. Il a en effet reçu une éducation très spéciale, loin de son père et sous l'influence d'une vieille dame très spirituelle et toute pleine d'ironie mordante. Le roman, qui se présente sous la forme d'une confession, s'énonce dans un style dépouillé, comme si le jeune homme tout en ne s'intéressant qu'à soi, ne s'intéressait que faiblement à lui-même, pour reprendre la célèbre formule constantienne. Une composante essentielle de la psychologie du personnage se trouve dans ce que l'on a trop rapidement interprété comme de la "lâcheté". En vérité, c'est une suspension de sa capacité d'action dont la source est une sensibilité toute pure. Malgré son désir d'être parfaitement honnête, Adolphe est incapable de dévoiler la véritable nature de ses sentiments pour Ellénore car il a peur de la faire souffrir. Paul Delbouille appelle cela sa religion de la douleur. Une telle disposition d'esprit se mêle à l'aristocratisme du personnage: c'est par orgueil qu'Adolphe se fait un devoir de séduire Ellénore. De ce point de vue, on peut le rapprocher du héros de Stendhal dans Le Rouge et le Noir; à ceci près que Julien Sorel tombe effectivement amoureux de Mme de Rênal: Adolphe n'est pas véritablement amoureux d'Ellénore. Dans la lignée des personnages de Crébillon[2] ou des héros du roman libertin du XVIIIe siècle, le héros constantien se révèle parfaitement froid sous le masque de la passion. Benjamin Constant de Rebecque, né à Lausanne le 25 octobre 1767, mort à Paris le 8 décembre 1830, inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise, est un romancier, homme politique, et intellectuel français d'origine vaudoise. Républicain et engagé en politique depuis 1795, il soutiendra le Coup d'État du 18 fructidor an V, puis celui du 18 Brumaire. Il devient sous le Consulat le chef de l'opposition libérale dès 1800. Après avoir quitté la France pour la Suisse puis l'Allemagne, il se rallie à Napoléon pendant les Cent jours, et revient en politique sous la Restauration. Élu député en 1818, il le sera encore à sa mort en 1830. Chef de file de l'opposition libérale, connue sous le nom des Indépendants, il est l'un des orateurs les plus en vue de la Chambre des députés et défend le régime parlementaire. Lors de la Révolution de juillet, il soutient l'installation de Louis-Philippe sur le trône. Auteur de nombreux essais sur des questions politiques ou religieuses, Benjamin Constant est aussi l'auteur de romans psychologiques sur le sentiment amoureux comme Le Cahier rouge (1807), où se retrouvent des éléments autobiographiques de son amour pour Madame de Staël, et Adolphe (1816).
