Adolphe Adolphe est un jeune homme age de vingt-deux ans au debut du recit. Il vient d'achever ses etudes a l'universite de Gottingen. C'est un garcon d'une intelligence superieure et qui se prepare a embrasser une brillante carriere. Il se montre cependant tres desabuse et il n'hesite pas a manifester en public une humeur des plus caustiques. Il a en effet recu une education tres speciale, loin de son pere et sous l'influence d'une vieille dame tres spirituelle et toute pleine d'ironie mordante. Le roman, qui se presente sous la forme d'une confession, s'enonce dans un style depouille, comme si le jeune homme tout en ne s'interessant qu'a soi, ne s'interessait que faiblement a lui-meme, pour reprendre la celebre formule constantienne. Une composante essentielle de la psychologie du personnage se trouve dans ce que l'on a trop rapidement interprete comme de la "lachete." En verite, c'est une suspension de sa capacite d'action dont la source est une sensibilite toute pure. Malgre son desir d'etre parfaitement honnete, Adolphe est incapable de devoiler la veritable nature de ses sentiments pour Ellenore car il a peur de la faire souffrir. Paul Delbouille appelle cela sa religion de la douleur. Une telle disposition d'esprit se mele a l'aristocratisme du personnage: c'est par orgueil qu'Adolphe se fait un devoir de seduire Ellenore. De ce point de vue, on peut le rapprocher du heros de Stendhal dans Le Rouge et le Noir; a ceci pres que Julien Sorel tombe effectivement amoureux de Mme de Renal: Adolphe n'est pas veritablement amoureux d'Ellenore. Dans la lignee des personnages de Crebillon[2] ou des heros du roman libertin du XVIIIesiecle, le heros constantien se revele parfaitement froid sous le masque de la passion. Benjamin Constant de Rebecque, ne a Lausanne le 25 octobre 1767, mort a Paris le 8 decembre 1830, inhume au cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise, est un romancier, homme politique, et intellectuel francais d'origine vaudoise. Republicain et engage en politique depuis 1795, il soutiendra le Coup d'Etat du 18 fructidor an V, puis celui du 18 Brumaire. Il devient sous le Consulat le chef de l'opposition liberale des 1800. Apres avoir quitte la France pour la Suisse puis l'Allemagne, il se rallie a Napoleon pendant les Cent jours, et revient en politique sous la Restauration. Elu depute en 1818, il le sera encore a sa mort en 1830. Chef de file de l'opposition liberale, connue sous le nom des Independants, il est l'un des orateurs les plus en vue de la Chambre des deputes et defend le regime parlementaire. Lors de la Revolution de juillet, il soutient l'installation de Louis-Philippe sur le trone. Auteur de nombreux essais sur des questions politiques ou religieuses, Benjamin Constant est aussi l'auteur de romans psychologiques sur le sentiment amoureux comme Le Cahier rouge (1807), ou se retrouvent des elements autobiographiques de son amour pour Madame de Stael, et Adolphe (1816)."
