About the Book

There are a lot of books on how to draw better and even a few that specialize in drawing emotions: but they all tend to give the same advice, make a face in a mirror and draw what you see. While there s no arguing that drawing what you see is the only way to advance as an artist, weve all seen enough bad acting to know that making a face is no way to create the kind of emotional attachment thats going to draw a viewer into a narrative or a situation. Artists just arent taught the most effective ways to make that face in the mirror. Acting for Artists: Bringing Better Performances to your Cartoons, Comics and Character Illustrations is a book thats designed to fill that gap. The history and methods of various approaches to actor training will be presented from the perspective of the visual arts. This is an art technique book that will help illustrators and comic artists of all types and skill levels to create more intriguing characters. Through various exercises that combine theatrical and drawing procedures, the reader will be drawn into new ways of thinking about how to better utilize the more mechanical methodologies that are taught in other books and classes. Also includes a collection of scripts by current comic artists to be used as acting exercises as well as the full length play Pirates, Palm Trees and Pina Coladas.

About the Author

Mark Mekkes began his education with a BA in Theater from Hope College in Holland Michigan. During College he worked as a magazine theater columnist and standup comic. From there he entered an internship at the McCarter Theater in Princeton New Jersey and spent 10 years working in various aspects of professional theater, from off Broadway to dinner theater and childrens productions. He has worked with famous performers such as Jamie Farr, Margaret OBrien and The Amazing Kreskin. More recently he has spent the last 13 years working for Disney Entertainment in Orlando Florida. In addition to his theatrical career, Mark received his second degree, a BFA in Illustration from Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota Florida. At Ringling he won a leadership award for his work with the student theater group. After graduating, in addition to creating the Web Cartoonists Choice Awards, he has produced online comics and freelance illustration for over 10 years. He is currently the creator of the comic strips Zortic and Saucer Seekers as well as the writer for the strip Abbys Agency. All of his work can be found at www.entireprizeenterprises.com. The two careers have overlapped and intertwined to create a unique perspective on both theatrical and artistic disciplines.
