About the Book

The contributions in the first part of this volume critically highlight the fact that Africa as imaginary and real continent from colonial times until the present day was mostly viewed as a monolithic bloc in literary texts, but that on the other hand there are also some texts which view Africa as consisting of different and varied regions. Two contributions critically engage with different aspects of Hans Grimm's novellas while another, taking a postcolonial approach, investigates the picturesque travel writing of colonial writer Frieda von Bülow. An investigation of narrative constructions of identity in the autobiography by the Nigerian migrant author Chima Oji, published in German and a critical appraisal of the influence of Brecht's theories on epic theatre on Yoruba and Koteba plays concludes this section. Three contributions in the second part present new perspectives on the subject of German as a foreign language arguing by way of analysing the state of German Studies in various African countries and by drawing on examples gained through teaching practice, that the concept of 'Landeskunde' has to be reassessed within the context of cultural studies. The final part of the volume contains two contributions: one examines the meaning of 'World' in Goethe's concept of World Literature and argues that Goethe builds on a far-reaching geographical imagination that was taking careful account of the latest trends in European expansionism. The other undertakes a critical appraisal of the Aktionsgruppe Banat from the 1970s and its influence on contemporary German-Romanian literature.
