La christologie apparaît de plus en plus comme le noyau de toute théologie chrétienne. Le présent ouvrage fait percevoir que Jésus-Christ est en personne le chemin de Dieu vers l'homme et le chemin de l'homme vers Dieu; et que la meilleure façon de faire de la théologie, c'est de se tourner vers le mystère du Dieu fait homme. Le livre évite de dissocier la considération des données historiques sur Jésus de l'étude de son agir salvifique et de l'articulation de son identité divino-humaine. Il vise à rendre compte de l'identité de Jésus à la lumière du mystère central de sa mort et de sa résurrection. Mais il rappelle aussi que les réponses concernant la signification salvifique du Christ sont devenues aujourd'hui plus «contextuelles»; et qu'il convient de tenir compte des «espaces» religieux et culturels dans lesquels s'insèrent les christologies. Tout en reconnaissant que Jésus n'est pas vraiment accessible sans son Dieu, la méthode adoptée admet que, dans l'ordre de l'exposé, la christologie d'en bas doit précéder la christologie d'en haut. La structure fondamentale de l'ouvrage se plie à celle, classique, des «quatre sens», qui saisit le sens historique comme le fondement et qui discerne la triplicité du sens spirituel: sens allégorique (élaboration du dogme et de la réflexion théologique, chap. 4-9 et 16), sens tropologique (ou éthique, chap. 13) et sens anagogique (chap. 14). Aussi distingue-t-il différentes voies d'accès au Christ (comme le titre du livre le suggère): par la recherche historique moderne (chap. 1), par la foi, grâce à l'expérience de Pâques (chap. 2), par les diverses christologies de l'Écriture sainte (chap. 3), par la tradition dogmatique de l'Église (chap. 4), par la réflexion théologique (par exemple celle de Thomas d'Aquin, de Nicolas de Cues, de Luther, ou des théologiens de la kénose, chap. 5-8), par la vie éthique (chap. 13), par l'expérience spirituelle (chap. 14). Le chapitre 9 rassemble les principales approches christologiques qui ont marqué la théologie de notre époque: la perspective subjective (Bultmann, Rahner), l'horizon de la cosmologie (Teilhard), la ligne de l'histoire (Pannenberg, Moltmann), la démarche à partir «d'en bas» (Schoonenberg, Küng, Schillebeeckx, Moingt), la perspective de la praxis (Duquoc, Boff, Sobrino), et l'horizon trinitaire (Barth, Balthasar, Bouyer, Kasper). Dans un chapitre ultérieur, Brito fournit sa propre présentation synthétique de la façon dont les différentes questions christologiques nous acheminent au Fils incarné, à sa personne, sa conscience, son annonce, son oeuvre rédemptrice, sa résurrection, son retour, sa récapitulation de l'histoire et sa manifestation du mystère trinitaire (chap. 12). Ce chapitre appartient à la théologie dogmatique; le chapitre 11 adopte, quant à lui, le point de vue de la théologie fondamentale: il indique l'accès au Christ que permettent la christologie philosophique et une christologie fondamentale d'orientation post-métaphysique. Quant à la christologie contextuelle, le livre montre comment différentes religions (judaïsme, islam, bouddhisme, hindouisme) et divers continents (Amérique latine, Asie, Afrique) accèdent au Christ; sans oublier la christologie féministe et la «christologie noire» (chap. 10). Un dernier chapitre considère la présence de Jésus dans la culture, notamment dans les images de fiction et dans les discours sans prétention christologique; il s'interroge, en fin de parcours, sur l'opportunité d'une christologie «postmoderne» (chap.15).
