Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Kunst - Bildhauerei, Skulptur, Plastik, Note: 1,0, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Veranstaltung: Laokoon - Von der antiken Skulptur zur modernen Medientheorie, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Aus einem einzigen Steinblock schufen, seine Söhne und die wunderbaren Windungen der Schlangen nach übereinstimmendem Plan die hervorragenden Künstler Hagesandros, Polydoros und Athenodoros, alle aus Rhodos. Dieses Zitat von Plinius dem Älteren stammt aus dessen Enzyklopädie "Naturalia historia" um 79 n.Chr. und stellt die früheste Erwähnung des Kunstwerkes dar. Der aus der griechischen und römischen Mythologie stammende trojanische Poseidonpriester Laokoon wurde in Vergils "Aeneis" mitsamt seiner zwei Söhne von zwei Schlangen getötet, nachdem er die Trojaner vor der List der Griechen, dem Trojanischen Pferd, gewarnt hat. Die Trojaner sahen darin die Strafe der Götter für die Entweihung des Geschenkes, was letztlich zum Untergang Trojas führte. Die oben erwähnte Plastik zeigt Laokoon und seine beiden Söhne im Todeskampf mit den Schlangen (siehe Abb. 1). Bis 1506 blieb die antike Skulptur aus der Zeit des Hellenismus verschollen. Nach der Wiederentdeckung begann eine Phase der intensiven künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung: Künstler zeichneten die Gruppe und fertigten Stiche, sowie Skulpturen in Bronze und Marmor. Im 18. Jahrhundert setzte dann mit Winckelmanns "Gedanken über die Nachahmung der griechischen Werke in der Malerei und Bildhauerkunst" die intensive literarische Beschäftigung mit der Laokoon-Gruppe durch Dichter wie Goethe, Lessing und Schiller ein, wodurch die Plastik besondere Bedeutung für die Ästhetik der deutschen Aufklärung und der Weimarer Klassik gewann . Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bzw. Anfang des 20. Jh. findet die Skulptur wieder Beachtung, und zwar in den Arbeiten des Hamburger Kunsthistorikers Aby Warburg.
