La muerte prematura del rey Felipe III de España en la mañana del 31 de marzo del año 1621 toma por sorpresa a toda la población. Felipe III, doce años antes de su muerte expulsa a los moros del reino de España acosado por la animadversión que sentía por ellos su esposa la reina Margarita y por las intrigas del siniestro y corrupto valido real, el poderoso Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas -duque de Lerma-, quién se enriquece a costa de la expulsión de los moros y judíos y de las falsas denuncias ante la santa Inquisición, con las que logra despojar de sus propiedades y condenar por hereje a su amigo de infancia el moro Alí y a su familia. El duque de Lerma entre muchas de sus fechorías organiza la compra y venta de esclavos en asocio con Manicongo -el rey del Congo-, quien con subterfugios esclaviza junto con su esposa e hijos al verdadero heredero al trono; el príncipe y duque Nwane, para ser vendidos en Cartagena de Indias. Gonzalo Núñez de Mendoza, es un timador y secuaz a las órdenes del duque de Lerma. El día de la muerte del rey, Gonzalo roba el medallón real, huye y decide probar fortuna embarcándose con destino al Nuevo Reino de Granada. Sobre el medallón real robado pesa una terrible maldición a Felipe III por parte de los moros expulsados. Al robar el medallón real Gonzalo, sin saberlo, se hace acreedor a la misma maldición que le hicieron los moros al rey Felipe III. Embarcado a Cartagena de Indias en el galeón San Jorge, Gonzalo se encuentra en una cena organizada por el capitán, un militar de noble estirpe, con la hija del moro Alí y su esposo judío a quienes había falsamente denunciado y que huían de la santa Inquisición, y con clérigos doctrineros de distintas órdenes. Don Diego, el cacique de Vbaque quien venía de ser recibido en las cortes españolas es otro de los comensales. Viajan también en el galeón esclavos africanos entre los que se encuentra Nwane el verdadero heredero del reino del Congo. Todos estos viajeros hacen una nueva vida en la próspera Cartagena de Indias unidos por un destino incierto y por la sombra de una maldición. Rodrigo Núñez uno de los descendientes de Gonzalo Núñez descubre la maldición que pesa sobre su familia y su descendencia y comprende por qué les ocurren cosas terribles. Descubre también que sus amigos y su prometida son descendientes de quienes cuatrocientos años atrás se habían embarcado en el galeón San Jorge y que hay cosas espantosas que están por suceder. Sólo un acto de amor, y de profundo desprendimiento, como lo había profetizado fray Pedro Claver puede anular la maldición sobre su familia y su descendencia.
