Zu komplex sind die Unternehmen in ihrem Umfang und ihren Aufgaben geworden, als dass ihre Führung noch aus der unmittelbaren Anschauung und Erfahrung heraus möglich ist. Folglich kann es sich kaum ein Unternehmen noch leisten, seinen Weg durch Probieren zu suchen. An die Stelle des Verfahrens von "trail and error" treten heute wissenschaftliche Planungsmethoden, die den Planungsprozess objektiv, wiederholbar und nachprüfbar gestalten. Somit gehört die Planung mittlerweile zu den wichtigsten Aufgaben der Unternehmensführung und zum Standardrepertoire des Managements. Grundsätzlich wird über die Entwicklung der Unternehmung nur auf der Basis von strategischen und operativen Plänen entschieden und so haben Umfang sowie Intensität der Unternehmensplanung in den letzten 25 Jahren erheblich zugenommen. Gerade in jüngster Vergangenheit findet jedoch aufgrund des steigenden Wettbewerbsdrucks und der damit verbundenen Effizienzorientierung eine Überprüfung aller Unternehmensfunktionen nach Optimierungspotentialen in den Dimensionen Zeit, Kosten und Qualität statt. Die Planung konkurriert zunehmend mit anderen Aktivitäten um die knappen Ressourcen des Managements und muss daher gewisse Funktionen gleichwertig oder sogar besser erfüllen als andere Koordinationsmechanismen.
