He is a former Editor of The Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling. He has received numerous counseling awards including the American Counseling Association's Fellow Award, the International Association for Addictions and Offender Counseling's Addictions Educator Excellence Award, the Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling's Research Award, and the American Counseling Association's Berdie Research Award. His clinical and research experiences span 25 years and include the intertwined professional topic of "life-threatening behaviors". He has authored 40 refereed journal articles, multiple book chapters, 6 assessment instruments, and 7 books including his latest book, Suicide, Self-injury, and Violence in the Schools: Assessment, Prevention, and Intervention Strategies (Wiley & Sons, 2010). He also coauthors a suicide and violence blog for Psychology Today. His most recent assessment instrument EL SUICIDIO was written in Spanish. The instrument provides Mexican school counselors a means to assess suicide risk with corresponding clinical interventions. Dr. Juhnke is a nationally recognized presenter known for his energetic and lively professional keynote programs. He has served as a consultant to the U.S. Army, The University of Texas Health Science Center Division of Community Pediatrics, school districts, psychiatric hospitals, courts, and municipalities.
