Dorian souhaite alors que le tableau vieillisse à sa place pour qu'il garde toujours sa beauté d'adolescent. Son voeu sera exaucé l'aristocrate anglais va, certes, pouvoir rester éternellement jeune, mais ce voeu a un coût: c'est son portrait qui vieillira à sa place et qui sera progressivement marqué par les ans, les vices et les crimes.
