About the Book

Reprint & German Translation. This reprint is a handmade reproduction from the original edition of 1920, and remains as true to the original work as possible: unabridged and unedited. The Oscar & Nobel Prize in literature winner Bernard Shaw explained in the Observer in April 1913: "It is the custom of the English press when a play of mine is produced, to inform the world that it is not a play - that it is dull, blasphemous, unpopular and financially unsuccessful. The news is duly telegraphed to Berlin and Vienna, with the result that the managers there have been compelled to postpone productions. Hence arose an urgent demand on the part of the managers that I should have my plays performed by them. I have at last complied with this demand." As the New York Times in November 1913 had published extracts of Pygmalion in unauthorised retranslation from the German translation, Shaw wrote to his agent for copyright Reynolds: "The quotations given from it were not the original text, but a translation from a German translation by an American trying to write cockney dialect, the result being about as satisfactory and as creditable to the author as if a picture by [John Singer] Sargent had been copied by a German painter, the German copy copied by an unknown American painter, and this third hand copy exhibited in New York as the original. Under these circumstances I think I am entitled to ask the proprietors of the New York Times whether they claim a right to treat literary property in this manner."Oscar- und Literaturnobelpreisträger Bernard Shaw war eine widersprüchliche Persönlichkeit: "Unter den vielen, die nie lesen, was ich schreibe, und es nicht verstehen könnten, wenn sie es lesen würden, habe ich bereits vom Hörensagen einen Ruf als lebendes Paradoxon." "I have been kicking my heels here for months faking news [!] for my people when there was no news", offenbart Shaw's Antiheld, Journalist von Beruf, in seinem Bühnenstück Geneva, uraufgeführt 1929.
