About the Book

Candida: a Mystery (Reprint) & Candida: ein Lustspiel (German Translation). This reprint is a handmade reproduction from the original edition of 1920, and remains as true to the original work as possible: unabridged and unedited. The Oscar & Nobel Prize in literature winner Bernard Shaw wrote to his friend about this play: "Now the whole point of the play is the revelation of the weakness of this strong and manly man, and the terrible strength of the febrile and effeminate one. You still want love and happiness, as Eugene thought he did until Candida's quiet description of their happy home opened his eyes to the fact that "life is nobler than that." Like Napoleon in The Man of Destiny you must learn to say "Should I be what I am if I cared for happiness?" Like Dick Dudgeon you must be able to look around the parson's home & see that it is beautiful ― "almost holy," and yet know that you yourself have something bigger in hand than domestic joys. In Candida Morell is Candida's "boy," her Jakob. Now though she pities Eugene's youth and immaturity, he is never her boy. She knows that he is beyond them and will grow out of them (we talk of a boy "growing out of " his clothes when he grows too big for them); and the relation that grows up between them ― the relation that even closer that between herself & Morell ― is the relation between two clever people who understand certain things that others, far dearer to them, do not understand. You, being a clever man, will often meet married women who, being cleverer than their husbands, will be able to talk to you in a way that they cannot talk to their husbands; but don't ever suppose, or encourage them to suppose, that they love you better."Oscar- und Literaturnobelpreisträger Bernard Shaw erzählte in Candida eine Dreiecksgeschichte zwischen dem starken, männlichen, viel bewunderten 40-jährigen Pfarrer Jakob Morell, seiner aufrichtigen, hübschen 33-jährigen bürgerlichen Ehefrau Candida - die vermutlich sehr bald matronenhaft wird, sich aber noch im besten Licht zeigt - und deren schmächtigen, einsamen, feinsinnigen, nach Liebe suchenden, poetisch begabten 18-jährigen adeligen Verehrer Eugene Marchbanks.
