On fhe refiremenf of Dr. Roberf Allyn, fhe board of frusfees elecfed Professor John Hull. A nafive of Soufhern Illinois and_a member of fhe fac ulfy, fo succeed him as presidenf. Professor Hull had been broughf fo fhe faculfy from Old Normal fo re-organize and superin'tend fhe Training School, a work which he accomplished in fhe besf fradi'rion of fhe normal school. His personal unpopularify made fhe one year of his presidency an unhappy one for himself, buf he gave fhe young insfi'mfion a wide and favorable pub Iici'ry in fhe fine exhibif which he prepared for display af fhe World's Columbian Exposifion af Chicago in I893. A new board of frus'rees. Appoinfed by Governor John P. Alfgeld. Called Dr. Harvey W. Everesf fo fhe presidency. Presidenf Everesf, like Dr. Allyn. Was a minis'rer who had achieved a disfinguished career as a college presidenf: firsf as fhe successor of James A. Garfield af Hiram College, and fhen as presidenf of Eureka College, of Bufler Universify, and of Gar field Universify. The four years of Dr. Everesf's presidency of Soufhern saw a disfincf frend foward ihe Iiberalizing of fhe curriculum, wifh more empha Presidenf Harvey W. Everesf sis upon fhe liberal arfs fradifion. A new building fo provide for an expanding I893-I 897 library and museum, laborafories, and gymnasium was erecfed during Dr. Ever esf's presidency af a cosf of This, fhe second building in Soufhern's expanding physical planf, is now called fhe Old Science building and is nofe worfhy for ifs disfincfive fype of archi'recfure suggesfive of a medieval casfle.
