About the Book

1844. What makes this year so important? There are many reasons 1844 is an interesting year. * The U.S. signed its first treaty with China. * Samuel F.B. Morse sent his first telegraph. * Charles Goodyear patented his vulcanization process, which made rubber useable in so many new ways. * Oregon territory enacted a law preventing African Americans, slave or free, from entering its boundaries. * A devastating flood occurred along the Missouri River and Upper Mississippi River, which contributed to the anger people felt against the new 'Mormon' population. It led to an anti-Mormon mob murdering Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Latter-day Saints. However, these were small events for those involved in the Millerite movement. Their focus was the Second Coming of Jesus. Some anticipated it with great longing. Other's wanted to be ready, "Just in case." (Who these were became apparent after the "Great Disappointment.") Others scorned the Millerites as fools, or worse as lunatics. This puzzle book offers a new way to experience 1844. You will meet the leading characters in the Millerite movement through their own words in Cryptograms, Piece by Piece and Flip Phone Keypad Swap puzzles. You'll also learn of the world they lived in through Two In, Fill In and Word Search puzzles that have glossaries attached. There are Crossword, Keywords, Alphabet Soup, Crypto Words, Scrambled Words, Interlace, How Many Words, Dittos, Mazes and other puzzle types included. I hope you'll enjoy the journey. You're guaranteed to sharpen your brain-power along the way. This is a new way to experience 1844.
About the Author: Denise Rutledge enjoys researching and writing about many topics. She'd also a fan of puzzles. To bring learning and puzzles together is dream come true. Her puzzle experiences began young with Word Search puzzles. Then when her high school English teacher gave extra credit for doing crossword puzzles, she became hooked. However, it wasn't until she bought a crossword puzzle book in a Cruzan drugstore that she developed her crossword strategy. She found herself stumped on the first puzzle! So she cheated and used the answer key. That made the second puzzle easier. Partway through, she realized she no longer had to cheat. 'Cheating' had expanded her vocabulary. It was also in a drugstore in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, that Denise bought her first Dell mixed-puzzle book. She skipped over the cryptograms. That changed when her sister-in-law got married. There's a lot of airplane time between St. Croix and Seattle, so she carried a puzzle book on the plane. It was on this trip that her mother-in-law, Afton Rutledge, re-gifted one her own puzzle books so Denise could enjoy the crosswords. Afton had finished all the cryptograms! Thus began Denise's introduction to cryptograms. Curiosity urged her to discover why Afton loved them. In the end, she became fascinated by them as well. Being able to bring history and puzzles together became possible when Denise learned about Puzzle Master. This software allows her to create the wide array of puzzles you find within this book. About the only puzzles she enjoys that can't be found within these pages are logic puzzles.
