About the Book

Race literacy changes everything. It changes the way we view ourselves and our nation. Race literacy gives us the proper context in which to ground our conversations on Race. It touches our heart, and leaves us free to have healthier relationships, and greater compassion for self and other. We don't know what we don't know, but if we open ourselves up to new possibilities, everything changes. Written to be read in under an hour, this book is meant to spark thoughts and conversations leading to new ways of being. Starting with REASON 1 - Relieve Stress and Fragility; through REASON 5 - What We Don't Know Can Hurt Us; and on to REASON 11 - It Sets Us Free, 11 REASONS TO BECOME RACE LITERATE: A Pocket guide to a new conversation, leads its readers through a journey and a rediscovery of ourselves, our communities, and our nation. This book is for those who find it uncomfortable to have a conversation about race and who could benefit from more information on the subject. The book is based on my own journey of learning about Race in America through 25 years of creating and facilitating seminars and the understanding needed to make a personal and collective transformation.
About the Author: Milagros Phillips, author of 11 REASONS TO BECOME RACE LITERATE: A pocket guide to a new conversation, specializes in transforming relationships between people of different backgrounds, by using a powerful approach that leaves participants empowered and hopeful. Her program, RACE DEMYSTIFIED: A COMPASSIONATE APPROACH TO THE HEALING OF AMERICA has been presented for more than 15 years to Fortune 100 Companies, colleges, universities and communities throughout the US. She created UNTOLD HISTORY TOURS in 2015, a family friendly way to experience Washington DC history. Milagros was the Founding Executive Director of "The National Resource Center for the Healing of Racism." She has served as Expert in Residence for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Michigan State University uses her part of her model to train their diversity facilitators. The Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), has included Race Demystified, as part of their certification curriculum. Between 2002 and 2004 Milagros trained over one thousand employees, executive staff and board members at a fortune 100 Insurance Company. She has lectured in the US, Mexico and Europe, has over 25 years of facilitation experience, and is fluent in Spanish. Milagros developed the three part approach that became the foundation for Congressional Conversations on Race (CCR) as well as co-facilitated the program. This assisted national leaders in crafting a productive conversation about Race in America, leading to community action and collaboration. Milagros develops and facilitates customized seminars and programs for the private and corporate sectors.
