Tantôt idiot, tantôt sage, toujours facétieux, il nous fait toujours sinon rire, du moins sourire, par sa naïveté feinte ou son sens de l'absurde, qui tourne en dérision l'arrogance, l'orgueil, la vanité et la bêtise des puissants et des riches aussi bien que des ignorants qui s'ignorent. Il peut être grave, sérieux ou absurde, souvent taquin et rusé. C'est un personnage moitié fou moitié sage, dont on a dit qu'il est "tellement intelligent qu'il en devient bête ou il est si bête qu'il finit par dire des choses intelligentes". On le retrouve en action à la mosquée, au hammam, dans son vignoble ou sa maison, sur la place du marché, et, s'impliquant dans un large spectre de situations, de la narration enfantine naïve à la méditation profonde, religieuse ou philosophique, il traite de questions comme l'injustice sociale, la paresse, l'étroitesse d'esprit, la gourmandise, l'égoïsme, l'ignorance, les privilèges de classe, la mort, le destin de l'homme, les mystères de la vie, etc. Les personnages qu'il campe ou ses protagonistes (souvent issus du milieu rural) proviennent de tous les milieux sociaux: du prince au mendiant, de l'érudit à l'ignorant, le politicien comme le prêtre, le marchand comme le client, le jeune comme le vieux, le riche comme le pauvre, etc. Ses histoires drôles et moralisantes sont assez courtes et acérées, véhiculant le plus souvent des sous-entendus philosophiques ou des connotations ésotériques. Selon les pays et les époques, ses histoires ont subi les transformations les plus diverses. La célébrité du personnage dépasse les siècles, les générations et les âges.Si ses facéties ont été publiées pour la première fois en turc vers la fin du 15ème siècle, elles sont inspirées des facéties arabes d'un certain Djeha, qui aurait vécu au 10ème siècle. Par ailleurs, on y retrouve des influences indiennes, persanes, voire grecques. Parfois, on ne les raconte même pas, on se contente souvent du titre qui fonctionne comme une sorte de proverbe. Ainsi parle t-on, pour caractériser certaines situations, du "clou de Djeha", de "scier la branche sur laquelle on est assis", de "prêcher le faux pour savoir le vrai", etc.La tradition veut qu'il soit un lettré de l'époque d'Haroun al-Raschid ou qu'il ait vécu à la cour de Khawarizmi vers la fin du 12ème siècle. Ses histoires semblent dater de cette époque. Toutefois, si on en croit le récit de ses rencontres avec le sultan Tamerlan (Timour Lang), il aurait vécu à la fin du 14ème et au début du 15ème siècles. Enfin, il pourrait être contemporain du Seldjoukide Ala Al-Din (13ème siècle). Le contenu des nombreuses anecdotes suggère que Nasreddin Hoja ait vécu en Asie Mineure entre le 11ème et les 14ème siècles. C'est vers 1237 qu'il serait parti pour Ak shehir (Anatolie occidentale), où il serait mort en 1284, comme en témoigne la présence de sa tombe. Certains autres disent qu'il a vécu à Koufa au sud de l'Irak au 8ème siècle. Il y en a même qui affirment que Djeha est enterré en Algérie et que les gens visitent sa tombe comme on honore celle d'un saint..
