About the Book

Nelson Mandela is regarded worldwide as one of the most inspirational figures in history. In every language and in every country, Mandela's legacy shines as a beacon of hope and healing and a reminder of the power of the human spirit to overcome impossible conflicts. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, into the royal family of the South African tribe. His father died when he was 9 years old, and soon after, he was adopted by a chief executive who helped him develop leadership skills. Madela was the first person in her family to receive formal education. A Nelson Mandela education quote emphasizes that true power lies in knowledge, so when he became president of the African National Congress, he was able to introduce free education worldwide to improve the quality of life of the country's black people. Like Gandhi before him, Mandela is an ardent believer in the equal rights and abilities of the people of all origins and backgrounds. His courage in the face of oppression is an example of the power of passion and perseverance to change the world. Nelson Mandela was virtually executed for opposing the separatist policies of the South African government and was sentenced to 27 years in prison for fighting to overthrow the country's apartheid regime. He spent the first 18 years in a brutal Robben Island prison. Because he was a black political prisoner, he had fewer privileges than other prisoners. He spent all those years in a small cell, without a bed or plumbing, eating less than others, but was forced to work twice as hard. When he was finally released in 1990, rather than break himself or become bitter, his sole focus was on healing the divisions of his country, reuniting old enemies and rebuilding them for common causes. Mandela had unwavering confidence in the power of empathy, honesty and dialogue to heal the deepest and most complex wounds. His admiration for his former oppressors earned the admiration of South Africans and people around the world, and greatly facilitated the transition to his country's democracy. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his lifetime of racial peace and reconciliation, and the following year, Mandela became South Africa's first black president, allowing South Africans of all ethnicities to vote for the first time in an important election.
