The Ten Commandments is one aspect of a Christian life that has suffered lack of attention in recent times. The reason is not too far away. Modern Christians seems to relegate its importance because of the belief that it is an old testament doctrine, therefore, it's one of those "things" in the old testament that Jesus Christ came to redeem us from. "We are no longer under the law but grace," a pastor said. I replied, we cannot continue to pretend that sin is no longer sin because Jesus saved us. It was asked in Romans 6:1, "... Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?" If not, our Christian life must be guided, hence, the relevancy of the Ten Commandments.
In the olden days, societies were guided by Kings making proclamations, and those proclamations becomes law. It was pretty much so until Moses encounter with God in Mount Sinai, where Moses was handed two stones with laws on them, written by God Himself. And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God (Exodus 31:18).
Most aspects of any nation's constitution today gained root from the Ten Commandments as well as most morality issues. Killing is a sin so also it is a crime; Stealing is a sin as also a crime, dishonoring your parents is frowned at by the society, so also is coveting a neighbor's property and committing adultery. The Ten Commandments is not only relevant to the society, but also to every individual human being.
The bible says, "My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother; Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life; Pro. 6:20-23. This is one of the reasons we must begin to pay attention again to the Ten Commandments.
This book critically examined the Ten Commandments and try to relate it to our everyday living. The author found much more than he envisaged going into it, and has therefore, shared what he found.
