About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The last Spaniards of Mauthausen, whose stories are anything but fiction, is a compilation of stories lived by Spanish survivors of the Nazi concentration camps.

This is the story of Spanish prisoners, their executioners, and their accomplices; a unique book to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps.

"I had to try to tell nine thousand stories, one for each of the Spaniards who passed through the Nazi concentration camps. I felt the need to explain their desires, travel with them on those fateful trains of death, get closer to their suffering in the fields, find out whatever it was that they clutched on to for support while trying to survive, to feel their overwhelming joy when they were liberated, and to grasp their frustration at the inability to return to their homeland. For this I visited with a few survivors who can still speak about their personal first-hand experiences. Knowing them has been one of the greatest privileges that life has given me. It is not an easy book, it never intended to be, but I hope it will be useful since the history of our prisoners has no expiration date. In this case, perhaps more than in any other, looking to the past is the best way to understand the present and foresee our future." -Carlos Hernández de Miguel

This is the story of those men and women who survived or died in Mauthausen, and it is also a journalistic account that denounces politicians, the military, businessmen, and entire countries that turned a blind eye.
