Le fluor est bénéfique, en particulier pour les jeunes enfants, pour la calcification de l'émail dentaire avant l'âge de huit ans, lorsqu'il est présent dans les limites autorisées de 1,0 à 1,5 mg/L. Un excès de fluorure dans l'eau de boisson provoque une fluorose dentaire et/ou une fluorose squelettique. Les normes indiennes relatives à l'eau potable recommandent une concentration de fluorure acceptable de 1,0 mg/L et une concentration de fluorure admissible de 1,5 mg/L dans l'eau potable. Afin d'éliminer la concentration de fluorure de l'échantillon contaminé, l'oxyde de fer, les nanoparticules d'hydroxyde et les échantillons d'eau contaminée par le fluorure ont été préparés en laboratoire. Au cours de l'altération et de la circulation de l'eau dans les roches et les sols, le fluorure peut être lessivé et se dissoudre dans les eaux souterraines et les gaz thermiques. La teneur en fluor des eaux souterraines varie considérablement en fonction du contexte géologique et du type de roches. Les minéraux fluorés les plus courants sont la fluorine, l'apatite et les micas.
