William O Carlile

William O CarlileBorn in 1839, into an Anglo-Irish family, William Ogle Carlile was commissioned as an officer in the British Army in 1861. Lieutenant Carlile was posted to Canada with the 3rd Brigade, Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1867. As an accomplished artist, h illustrated many Canadian scenes and military activities leading up to the departure, in 1871, of the last Imperial garrison defending Canada. Many of Carlile's paintings, drawings and cartoon sketches were published in magazines such as the Canadian Illustrated News, L'Opinion Publique Journal Illustre and the Illustrated London News, as well as in his own book Recollections of Canada. Just before the Royal Artillery left it's last garrison at Quebec City, William married a local girl, Rachel Louisa Phillips. After retiring from the British Army in 1887 with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, William and Louisa settled at Fleet, Hampshire, England. William died there in 1907. Read More Read Less
