His free-lance writing has appeared in many other publications, and his work has won many professional and civic awards. Usin family diaries and letters, he has edited two books, Sarah Jane Foster: Teacher of the Freedmen and The Diaries of Sarah Jane and Emma Ann Foster: A Year in Maine During the Civil War. Since his retirement from the Bangor Daily News, he has written more than 250 columns on Maine and Bangor for the newspaper.
