Valerie Elaine DeeringValerie Elaine Deering is an accomplished written and spoken word artist whose work centers around life, love and social justice. Exposed to the work of e.e. cummings in elementary school, Valerie began a lifelong affair with the rhythm and rhyme of oetry, along with its ability to spark action, provoke thought and soothe the spirit. A former educator, Valerie recognized the power of poetry in the classroom as a tool to convey concepts, ideas and facts through the rhythm, rhyme and imagery of the poetic word and often used poetry to achieve required goals and benchmarks. Known best as The Nappy Headed Poet, Valerie has performed her work in churches, schools and spoken word venues in Detroit and Chicago. Additionally, Valerie was the featured poet for the Marygrove College Legacy event and the grand reopening of the Marygrove College Internet Archive Library. A native Detroiter and graduate of Cass Tech High School, Valerie holds a B.A. degree in Political Science from Marygrove College; Detroit, Michigan and a M.S. in Early Childhood Education from Dominican University; River Forest, Illinois.
