Collins lives with his wife, Wendy, in Prescott, Arizona, where he volunteers at the Sharlot Hall Museum Library & Archives, conducts research, and presents entertaining programs about the heater. Collins taught at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for thirty-one years and cofounded the Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival.
