Sylvia WynterBorn in Cuba, Sylvia Wynter grew up and was educated in the then British colony of Jamaica. A series of scholarships would take her to the University of London (King’s College) and the University of Madrid. Her studies would culminate in a BA in Spansh Literature and a MA thesis on Golden Age Spanish Literature. These studies would also serve as the basis for her later works’ rethinking of the modern world system, as first initiated by the voyages of the Portuguese into West Africa and the Spanish into the Americas.
