Sybil J GilchristEducator and amateur genealogist, Sybil Johnson (Gilchrist) grew up in Portsmouth and Danville, Virginia. She holds a BA in English from Virginia Union University and an MA in French from Boston University. Johnson spent her Junior Year Abroad at theUniversity of Ibadan in Nigeria. In 1967, she joined the Peace Corps and taught English as a Second Language in Francophone Cameroon. After her experiences in West Africa, Johnson relocated to Massachusetts. She taught in the Boston Public Schools before spending 34 years in the Medford Public Schools as a teacher of French and other languages.Upon retiring, Gilchrist worked as a freelance French> English translator and church administrative assistant. Currently, the author is very active in regional organizations. She is a member of the Executive Board of the New England Translators Association. She also serves on the board of the New England chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. She has written several articles regarding her family's history for the AAHGS-NE newsletter. She has participated in several virtual presentations focusing on the Moorman-Flippin Legacy. Sybil is married to Steven Gilchrist. They are the proud parents of Janelle (Chris) and Steven, Jr. (Serena) as well as blessed grandparents of Janessa. CAMARADES OF WAR I is the author's first book which has been in the making since 1982 when she began research into her family's roots.
