Susan Downing DaySusan Day is an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech who studies tree root-soil interactions and their role in urban ecosystem sustainability--particularly in terms of soil quality and stormwater mitigation. Her work with the Sustainable Sites Initiaive (SITES(R)) shaped the soils standards now institutionalized by the U.S. Green Building Council and adopted by the U.S. federal government. Prof. Day has collaborated with designers, engineers, and policymakers and is a former Chair of the Urban and Anthropogenic Soils Division in the Soil Science Society of America.
