After obtaining his Ph.D. from Imperial College London in 1993, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona (1993-6), a temporary lecturer at te University of Nottingham (1996-8) and Imperial (1998-2000), before joining Heriot-Watt as a lecturer in 2000.
