Sidney WainwrightWhile I could tell you the flavour of Mr Wainwright's pipe tobacco there is little I really know about him. I can't tell you the names of his parents, where he was born, the date of his birth, or even which year. What I do know is that the dark talesof folklore and local legend that he grew up with left a deep and lasting impression on him. The stories in 'After Midnight' were penned by Wainwright in the 1940's and 1950s from his travels and investigations in the first half of the twentieth century. They draw on the folklore of the places in Britain that he travelled to during that period. In 1959, after setting out on an expedition to New Guinea, Wainwright disappeared when his ship, the Aurora, vanished in the Atlantic Ocean. To add intrigue to the unfortunate events, the only copy of the 'After Midnight' manuscript at the time was lost in a mysterious fire at the premises of his publisher. I tried many times after I lost my friend to search for his origins, for his home and family. To my amazement, all my inquiries were without success.
