A graduate of Dutchess Community Colleg in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, he served as copy editor of the narrative history History of Fort Wayne and Allen County, 1700-2005. Bushnell is the author of Hard News, Heartfelt Opinions: The History of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and co-author of Roanoke: The Renaissance of a Hoosier Village.
