Ruth HertzogRuth Hertzog was born and raised on a farm in New Jerusalem, Pennsylvania on March 24, 1926. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and then went to high school nearby. She joined the war effort and became a code girl working as a civiian in the Army on the early computers used to decrypt enemy communications. After the war ended, she returned home and worked an office job in the local hosiery mills until getting married and raising two children. She has been the caregiver for her family her entire life, including nursing care for her mother and father, child care for siblings, more nursing care for her husband, and rescuing a sibling from elder abuse (while in her 80s). She's been a pillar of her church, becoming the first woman to sit on her church council and teaching the adult Sunday school class for decades. She managed volunteers every summer making chow-chow as a popular fundraiser for her church. Countless quarts and pints of that chow-chow traveled coast to coast as she negotiated with suppliers. She was the tax collector for her township for a number of years and then focused her energies on organizing trips for a nearby senior citizens center. She did all this while being a homemaker. It was only after taking care of everyone and everything else that she could focus on her own intense desire to write. This story has been a long time coming. She now resides in a retirement community in Topton, PA where her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild plus her siblings and their children know they can count on birthday and Christmas cards from her.
