Robin ChilstromRobin Chilstrom has been a multi-disciplinary community artist in Portland, Oregon since 1971. She has worked professionally as a performer, visual artist, and arts educator. In the early years, she collaborated with other theater artists to create ad perform original work, most notably at Portland's Storefront Theater. As a musician and vocalist she toured nationally with the women's music ensemble, Izquierda. Later, she started her own business as a sculptural costumer, creating props and costumes for companies like Nike and Hanna Andersson. Also during the 1980's, she trained to work with special needs children as part of a theater-education team. The training included an educator's course with renowned improvisational theater teacher, Viola Spolin. Following this inspiring sojourn, Robin began to formally share Voiceweaving, a vocal improvisation form for small groups that she had been developing since the mid-1970's. By 1990, she had become a designer and sculptor for SCI, national builder of exhibits, theater sets and parade floats, while also facilitating Voiceweaving workshops at the Dreams Well Studio, a haven for experimental theater art. In 2003 she co-founded Earth Arts NW, a regional environmental-arts education program for children and adults. Over the years, she collaborated with thousands of children to create stories and art that honors the natural world. Today she continues to write and illustrate stories, co-create songs in community, and facilitate Voiceweaving workshops as broadly as possible.
