Robert RainyRobert Rainy was born on New Year's Day 1826 at 28 Montrose Street in Glasgow, Scotland. He was the son of Dr. Harry Rainy LLD (1792-1876), a surgeon who eventually became Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Glasgow, and his wife Barbra Gordon. The family lived at 28 Montrose Street. One of his uncles was George Rainy, a well-known slave plantation owner and Highland Clearances celebrity. In 1851, he was ordained by the Free Church in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, and in 1854, he transferred to the Free High Church in Edinburgh (the north-east section of New College). In 1862, he was chosen Professor of Church History at the same college. In 1874, he succeeded Robert Candlish as Principal of the College and became known as Principal Rainy.
