Robert P BestThe author is a retired judge who spent many years in the old Courthouse. Knowing it's history was a major factor in writing this short history of the 250 year old building, and its use as a courthouse, before and after the Revolution. The author wasborn in Dubois, PA in 1929. He went to Hobart College and Albany Law School, where he graduated with honors. He then went in the Navy's Officer Training program and the Navy jUstice School and was commissioned Lt. Junior Grade. He was assigned to work in the naval district in SanDiego, CA. Upon returning from work in the Navy, he moved to Gloversville, NY to be the law clerk of Honorable Willard L. Best, who was the presiding Supreme Court Judge in Fulton County, NY. He held that position until Judge Best retired. He then ran for Mayor of Gloversville in 1969. He Served as Mayor for one term. During his time in office an Industrial Park was created in Gloversville and Johnstown to help with the unemployment problem, which was very bad. After his term as Mayor, he practiced law and in 1976 ran for District Attorney of Fulton County. After being District Attorney for several years, he ran for Fulton County Judge and Surrogate and served for ten years. He then ran for Supreme Court and was elected in 1989, and served until 2001. After working in the old Courthouse as a law clerk, District Attorney, County Judge and Supreme Court Judge, I decided the old courthouse should be recognized on it's 250th birthday. In deciding how to tell this story, I quoted from the history books and from other authors on the history of the old courthouse. Read More Read Less
