He has written several books, including most recently, Physician Soldiers at the Forks and Braddock, Allegheny County (Pennsylvania), as well as numerus monographs and articles on a variety of Pittsburgh medical history subjects. Grom is a graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a degree in political science and public administration. He is a member of the C. F. Reynolds Medical History Society at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the Braddock's Field Historical Society, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
